The Histories of Herodotus decorated by Edward Bawden

Today we are presenting The Histories of Herodotus, translated by Harry Carter and illustrated and decorated by Edward Bawden. It is printed in an edition of 1500 copies for members of The Limited Editions Club by Joh. Enschedé in Haarlem, Holland, in Monotype Spectrum type designed by Jan van Krimpen on paper made at Wolvercote Paper Mill in Oxford and bound by J. Brandt & Zoon in Amsterdam. The book was designed by Harry Carter in concert with Edward Bawden and Jan van Krimpen, and it is signed by Bawden.

Edward Bawden (1903–1989) was an English painter, illustrator and graphic artist. The Monthly Letter of The Limited Editions Club in November 1958 describes Bawden’s ten double-page color spreads for each of the title pages of the nine books of The Histories of Herodotus:

“These spreads are lavish tapestries, no two alike, that leave the reader in little doubt that the text they embellish has a lot to say about the Greeks and the Persians. These color inserts have been printed separately and tipped in. There is a deliberate informality in the handling of these strictly formal designs, which have an air of antiquity well suited to the chronicle set forth by the Father of History himself.”
